Adobe Capability Atlas
A researched map of documented features across InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro: how automation can reach them, what our MCP tools cover, and what evidence supports each claim.
By application
Counts move through distinct evidence stages: features Adobe documents, reachable automation routes, MCP coverage, automated script checks, and validation in a running app.
| Application | Features | Scriptable | Implemented | Static checks | Live validated | MCP tools |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| InDesign | 2,742 | 2,609 95% | 2,524 92% | 2,523 | 0 | 423 |
| Illustrator | 2,540 | 1,951 77% | 1,562 61% | 1,561 | 0 | 308 |
| Photoshop | 2,609 | 1,720 66% | 1,413 54% | 1,410 | 0 | 205 |
| After Effects | 3,198 | 2,595 81% | 2,555 80% | 2,553 | 0 | 164 |
| Premiere Pro | 925 | 494 53% | 413 45% | 413 | 0 | 96 |
Percentages use each app’s documented feature count as the denominator. Static checks run generated scripts against a stubbed app and API definitions; live validation requires running the workflow in the actual Adobe app and checking the result.
Support, step by step
Each stage is separate evidence. Static checks exercise scripts with the app stubbed; they do not prove the feature works in a live InDesign session.

What kind of features
Automation routes
Illustrator's object model is a fifth the size of InDesign's, so far more of its features are reached only through menu commands, recorded Actions or the C++ SDK. Preference keys and Live Effect definitions used by published scripts reach many settings the object model does not list.

What kind of features
Automation routes
Photoshop's object model leaves out most adjustments, filters and settings, so many of its features are reached only through the Action Manager: executeAction with an event id and a descriptor of its settings. Those are counted as their own route, scriptable but outside the object model.

What stops a script
- BlocksUXP changes to Photoshop must run inside executeAsModalWrap every modifying batchPlay or DOM call in await core.executeAsModal(fn, {commandName}); read-only calls may run outside.
- BlocksOnly one plugin can hold the modal scopeAlways await executeAsModal, catch error number 9, raise timeOut where waiting is acceptable, and retry or report.
- CorruptsUn-awaited calls and swallowed exceptions defeat cancellationawait every Photoshop call, rethrow exceptions inside the target function, and check executionContext.isCancelled in long computations.
- BlocksbatchPlay throws more often since 23.4.1Guard batchPlay calls with try/catch, or use DOM methods where they exist.
- BlocksDialogs stop an unattended scriptSet app.displayDialogs = DialogModes.NO for the job (DisplayDialogs = 3 in VBScript, display dialogs to never in AppleScript) and restore the previous value afterwards.
- BlocksexecuteAction shows the command's own dialog unless told not toPass DialogModes.NO as the third argument and supply every parameter in the descriptor.
- CorruptsA UXP dialog's showModal does not lock PhotoshopCall showModal({lockDocumentFocus: true}).
- BlocksLetting the user work in a dialog during executeAsModal needs interactive modePass {interactive: true} to executeAsModal (Photoshop 23.3+); the user cancels through Plugins > Cancel Plugin Command instead of the progress dialog.
- BlocksAppleScript has no Action ManagerWrite the Action Manager part in JavaScript and run it with do javascript (with arguments for parameters).
- BlocksGenerative features need a connection, a signed-in account and creditsCheck connectivity and sign-in before a job, budget credits, and keep generative steps out of offline batch pipelines. In UXP, Document.generativeUpscale (27.2) is the one documented generative method.

Support, step by step
Each step is separate evidence. Static checks exercise scripts with the app stubbed; they do not prove the feature works in a live Premiere Pro session.

What kind of features
Automation routes
Premiere Pro is reached through a UXP plugin running inside the application; it has no AppleScript dictionary and no COM interface. A feature's route is the UXP API when a UXP plugin reaches it unattended (the members are in uxp_refs). Features only ExtendScript or the QE DOM reach keep the object model route, with a note that UXP does not reach them; our server cannot use that route. Our server's scripts are UXP JavaScript, and its tested state comes from checking each script against Premiere Pro's UXP DOM.

Commands seen in real scripts
Premiere Pro offers scripts no way to run a menu item.
What stops a script
- BlocksUXP edits must be built inside lockedAccessWrap action creation in lockedAccess and group them in one executeTransaction per undo step.
- BlocksNo API to run menu commandsUse a composite of members, the QE DOM where it covers the operation, or keyboard shortcuts sent by OS-level UI automation (fragile).
- BlocksSome members show dialogs unless told not toPass openDocument(path, true, true, true, true), importFiles(..., suppressUI=true, ...), exportFinalCutProXML(path, 1); save before quit; create sequences from presets (UXP createSequenceWithPresetPath or the QE newSequence) instead of createNewSequence.
- BlocksCommand-line script execution is unsupported and launch-onlyUse only for one-shot start-up jobs; for request/response automation use a panel bridge. Modifying the application folder may need administrator rights and is undone by updates.
- BlocksNo AppleScript route into PremiereUse a resident CEP or UXP plugin as a bridge; Apple events can still launch Premiere or open a .prproj.
- BlocksNo COM or VBScript route into PremiereUse a resident CEP or UXP plugin as a bridge.
- BlocksUXP plugins cannot listen for connectionsRun the server outside Premiere (in the MCP server or a small proxy) and have the plugin connect to it with WebSocket, as adb-mcp does. Declare the localhost domain in the manifest network permission. A hybrid plugin's native addon is not bound by this, but Adobe documents no server pattern.
- BlocksUXP launching external processes needs user consentStart helpers from the outside process, not from the plugin.
- BlocksCEP is being retired in PremierePlan a UXP bridge (WebSocket client) for 2028 onward; keep the CEP bridge for older versions.

How this was built
- Features come from Adobe's user guides and shortcut references; each record cites its source and is written in our own words. Third-party parity checklists were used only to spot omissions.
- Object models are generated from types-for-adobe (MIT), and for InDesign and Illustrator also from Gregor Fellenz's per-version references: InDesign 2023 to 2026, Illustrator 2022 to 2025, Photoshop 2015.5, After Effects 2026 and Premiere Pro 2024. No public object model exists yet for Illustrator 2026.
- Implemented and tested come from running every tool of adobe-mcp-indesign 2.4.0, adobe-mcp-illustrator 0.9.0, adobe-mcp-photoshop 0.1.0, adobe-mcp-aftereffects 0.1.0 and adobe-mcp-premiere 0.1.0 (all in the adobe-mcp repository) with the application stubbed, recording the calls each generated script makes and checking each script: ExtendScript against the application's object model, and Premiere Pro's UXP JavaScript against its UXP DOM. Nothing has been validated against a running application yet.
- Community scripts were parsed for the members and menu commands they use; no script was copied, and repositories without a licence are counted as evidence only.
- Menu commands are listed from published references and are unverified until run: Illustrator silently ignores a command string it does not know. Photoshop's Action Manager events come from Adobe's UXP event table, Adobe's bundled scripts and open-source helper libraries, and are unverified in the same way.
